Tripp Lite N425 series mode conditioning cables are made for Gigabit Ethernet 1000BASE-LX applications. This 2 meter version connects a single mode LC GBIC to an SC multimode patch bay and is fully compliant with the IEEE 802.3z standard.
You need a cable like this when deploying 1000BASE-LX routers and switches on an existing multimode fiber plant. LX (long wave, 1300 nm) transceivers launch a single mode laser, and firing that laser straight into the center of multimode fiber can split the signal into several paths. This effect, called Differential Mode Delay (DMD), confuses the receiver at the far end and sharply limits how far Gigabit Ethernet can run.
A mode conditioning patch cord fixes the problem by shifting the single mode launch away from the center of the multimode fiber, which removes those extra signals.
